Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka said the Police were on stand by mode due to inclement weather in many parts of the country.
"There were heavy rains and winds in many parts of the country, including the southern province. Winds are dying down down but the rain persists. There is no imminent threat of floods but we are on alert," the Minister said, last night.
Meanwhile, naval and fishing communities warned to be vigilant as wind speeds could increase up to 70 -80 kmph at times.
The Department of Meteorology issued a bad weather warning for heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas for the next 24 hours.
