Several events were held in memory of fallen heroes on ‘Maveerar Naal’ or ‘Heroes Day’ in the Northern Province, including at the Jaffna University.

Celebration for ‘Maveerar Naal’ is seen as a contentious issue as the people of the North pay respect to many of those who died in the fight against the Sri Lanka Army.

The government has however not stopped the people of the North from paying their respects to the slain.

LTTE leader Vellupullai Prabhakaran was a strong proponent of ‘Maveerar Naal’ and would make a rare appearance on this day to address the people.
