The Sri Lankan Navy has allegedly attacked Indian fishermen at the Gulf of Mannar. Fishermen in more than 600 trawlers had gone to the sea from Rameshwaram fishing port where they claim they were attacked.

Last night, while fishing near Katchatheevu, Sri Lankan Navy's 10 patrolling boats prevented the fishermen from fishing and also allegedly threatened the fishermen.

Today, in early morning, the same officials had threatened these fishermen near Dhanuskodi using guns and even warned the fishermen from venturing into that part of the sea. The Sri Lankan Navy officials allegedly took away their GPS tracking devices along with their catch.

The fishermen have alleged that they have been beaten up by these officials as well.

The fishermen claimed that each boat has returned at a loss of Rs 50-80 thousand because of the GPS and their catch that was taken away. Today, on the occasion of World Fishermen Day, an incident like this has caused a lot sorrow. The fishermen in Rameshwaram have declared today as a "black day."

Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is in India and will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon.

One of the fishermen, Irudhayam said, "This is our livelihood, we have urged the central and state government several times to save us from this tragedy. With Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, we Request Modi Government to help us." (India Today)
