Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, in his maiden budget speech, said the government would reduce the tax on electric vehicles by 01 million.

The Minister said all government vehicles to be hybrid or electric by 2025, and proposed to use alternate energy for all vehicles by 2040 . 

"A new carbon tax will be introduced for vehicles and the tax will be under Rs 1000 for year," the Minister said. 

Samaraweera also said there would be special tax on super luxury vehicles. 

He also added that three wheeler drivers would be encouraged to send their vehicles to countries like Bangladesh.
