President Maithripala Sirisena has said he was dismayed to learn of the disaster as a result of flooding in Sri Lanka, and ordered immediate remedial measures to aid those affected.
‘I was greatly dismayed and saddened by news of the disaster that claimed so many lives,’ the President said in a message. ‘I have ordered officers to immediately help those affected.’
The President is currently in Australia on a state visit on the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, to mark 70 years of establishing diplomatic ties with Australia.
The government said this morning that 13 had died as a result of floods and landslides in Sri Lanka but reports say the number is much higher, nearing 80 at this time.
