President Holds Discussion With Artistes

President Maithripala Sirisena has pointed out the need of a continuous procedure to implement intellectual proposals on the future developments in the arts, culture and cinema fields.

The President instructed to implement that procedure through a Committee which comprised of representatives from the Ministries of Media, Culture and Education.

He gave these instructions during a meeting with the prominent artistes, held at the Presidential Secretariat, today (19).

It was discussed in detail regarding the issue of paying royalty fees and the President instructed to establish a national policy in this regard by obtaining ideas from unprejudiced intellectual personnel who has a deep knowledge of the field.

During the meeting the attention was drawn regarding the development works of the John De Silva Memorial Theatre and the President gave instructions to take the future decisions after summoning a meeting between the relevant officials and the Minister of Cultural Affairs.

It was also discussed regarding the decision to limit the foreign films and tele dramas entering Sri Lankan markets for the development of the local industry, and the progress of implementation of the decision.

The artistes presented many suggestions for the upliftment of the local cinema and drama industry in this meeting.

President Sirisena said that the art industry can play a pivotal role in accomplishing the reconciliation process and pointed out the importance of making dramatic and cinematic creations which helps to build mutual understanding and national unity.

The President also said that through raising the school children artistic sense, we can build a future generation with knowledge and moral values.
