Government Medical Officers To Strike On May 22

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has said they will launch an island-wide strike on May 22, in protest of Police action against protesting students.

Yesterday, Police fired tear gas and water cannons at university students protesting against the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM). Eight, including a monk, were arrested.

The government last month offered a solution to the SAITM incident but university students are insisting the government shut down the private medical campus.

The Government Medical Officers Association too is calling for the private campus to be completely shut down.

The government solution to the problem included taking over the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital and organising further clinical training for SAITM students at two government hospitals.
