Fifteen May Day Rallies In Colombo Today: Over 20, 000 Police On Duty

Over 20, 000 police will be on duty in Colombo to ensure security during the May Day rallies organised for today, DIG Ajith Rohana said.

Speaking to the media he said that while the Special Task Force (STF) was on standby, 20, 000 police officers will be used for security during the May Day rallies.

Fifteen May Day rallies are scheduled to be held in Colombo today.

DIG Ajith Rohana further said drunk drivers will be arrested, as well as those that flout traffic laws.

He added that special CCTV surveillance would also be set up in Colombo to ensure order is maintained during the May Day rallies.

While the United National Party (UNP) will hold its rally at the Campbell Park in Borella, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will hold its May Day rally under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena at Gatambe grounds in Kandy.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which already held a rally in Jaffna yesterday, will hold their Colombo rally at the BRC grounds, while the Joint Opposition’s Podu Jana Peramuna will hold their rally at Galle Face.

The Ceylon Workers Congress will hold their rally at Ginigathhena, and several more political rallies are organised around the country.
