President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday evening issued a special gazette declaring garbage disposal an ‘essential service’.

Under the special gazette notification all aspects of waste disposal is considered essential and those opposing it can be arrested without warrant.

The Presidents move come against the backdrop of protests at various dumping grounds across the island and residents protest Colombo waste being dropped off in their area.

The special gazette comes into effect at midnight today.
