Police today used tear gas and water cannons to disperse residents in Dompe, who were protesting the dumping of garbage in their area.

The residents in Dompe are refusing to let Colombo Municipal authorities dump garbage in their area.

The current situation comes in the wake of the Meethotamulla tragedy after which dumping of garbage in Meethotamulla was stopped.

Currently the government has identified a few sites for temporary dumping of garbage – but residents are protesting against it.
