Disaster Management Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa clarified at a press conference yesterday, that the amounts of R.s 100, 000 for life and up to Rs. 2.5 million for property, were not compensation paid by the government, but from an insurance scheme.
“The government has not decided yet what the amount is to be paid as compensation,” the Minister told reporters. “That money is from an insurance scheme for natural disasters,” but we have not come to a conclusion on the amount to be paid as compensation yet.
He said the President had suggested the committee looking into the matter meets every three days and they were still in that process and would come to a decision soon.
