Over 200 trade unions have joined the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) island-wide strike against the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) that began this morning.
At a press conference yesterday Dr. Navin De Soyza said the GMOA had made several requests from the government including gazetting the minimum standards of medical education and they were disappointed that the government had not moved on it yet.
The strike that began at 8 am today will go on for 24 hours until 8 am tomorrow. Reportedly ayurvedic doctors, veterinarians and dentists have also joined the strike.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Joint Opposition (JO) have also joined the GMOA strike.
