Basic Standards For Medical Education In Sri Lanka

Minister Lakshman Kiriella stated that the government is ready to prepare basic standards for medical education. He added that, the government's stance is to form medical faculties that live upto higher standards. He further stated that, basic standards will be introduced to the SAITM of Malabe. Minister Kiriella was speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday. The minister also said that the medical council has been informed to prepare basic standards for the medical education. But the council has not responded yet. The minister also said that, though the president called discussions three times in regard to SAITM issue no representative from the medical council attended them. A new set of laws to the private education will be introduced by the government.

Minister also said that as SAITM has been recognized by a court decision the organization cannot be terminated . But the medical council has filed an appeal in regard to the court rule. The minister requested all the stakeholders to be patient till the court gives its decision over the appeal.
