Mullaitivu Magistrate Turns Down Request To Issue Notice On Shavendra Silva

The Mullaitivu Magistrate today rejected a request to issue notice on Major General Shavendra Silva before court in connection with the murder of former LTTE stalwart Sinnathurai Sashidharan alias Elilan.

Lawyers representing Ananthi Sashidharan, Elilan's wife, made the request from the Mullaitivu Magistrate when the habeas corpus case, filed by her, was taken up for hearing.

The former LTTE stalwart's wife alleged that 12 members of the organization, including Elilan, surrendered to the Sri Lanka Army, through the 58th division, commanded by Major General Shavendra Silva.

Major General Kalinga Gunawardena, on behalf of the 58th division of the Sri Lankan Army, informed court that his division was unaware of any such development.

At this point, Sashidharan's lawyers requested the Magistrate to issue notice on Silva who was the Commander of the 58th division at the time of Elilan's killing.

Turning down the request, the Magistrate said he would declare his position on the matter on April 28, at the next hearing of the case.
