President Maithripala Sirisena has agreed not to interfere with the Cabinet positions held by the UNP, at the unity government's cabinet reshuffle.
He has, however, asked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to make final decisions on changing the portfolios held by ministers representing the UNP, informed political sources said.
The discussion between the President and the Prime Minister took place before the former left for Russia last week.
Both parties had also agreed to maintain the 'composition' of the current cabinet.
"Therefore, the UNP: SLFP ratio in the current cabinet will not change," a senior Cabinet Minister said, on Sunday.
However, he also added that there would be another round of discussion between the President and the Prime Minister before the Cabinet reshuffle.
The 19th Amendment to the Constitution necessitates President Sirisena to make decisions on the cabinet in consultation with the Prime Minister.
Government sources said nearly 5 cabinet positions would change at the next reshuffle.
