Hussein Welcomes CTF Report Recommending Hybrid Court:Urges Govt To 'Make Use Of It'

UN Human Rights Chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein appreciated the report presented by the Consultative Task Force on Reconciliation Mechanisms (CTFRM).

The UN Human Rights Commissioner said the recommendations presented by the task force were 'thoughtful and conclusive'.

He also requested the Sri Lankan government to adopt a plan to implement the recommendations in the resolution passed by the UNHRC in October, 2015.

The UN Human Rights Chief made these remarks while presenting his report on Sri Lanka to the 34th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

He also urged the government of Sri Lanka to make use of the report which recommends the setting up of a hybrid court to prosecute alleged war crimes during the final phase of war.

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva led the Sri Lankan government at the session today.

"Although progress to establish Transitional Justice mechanisms has been slow, I was heartened by the recent CTF report," he added.

Hussein said his report acknowledged some positive advances on human rights and constitutional reforms in Sri Lanka.

He also recommended swift progress on establishing the Office of Missing Persons(OMP), following the passage of the legislation.
