The hostel can accommodate 400 students and it has 100 rooms. It had been named in memory of late Minister Lalith Athulathmudali to recall the services he rendered to university students. It was scheduled to be opened under the patronage of the Finance Ministry Secretary but the students opposed the move. Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Upul Dissanayake said that an internal investigation would be conducted into the incident.
