Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday, the Colombo Chief Judicial Medical Officer, Dr. Ajith Tennakoon stated that Sri Lanka’s present laws with regard to abortions require changes.
He further added that carrying out abortions is should be allowed based on the decision of the relevant persons and considering humanitarian factors.
Dr. Tennakoon noted that a proposal seeking the legalization of abortions in the country, under three grounds, has been put forward for consideration.
The Justice Ministry was looking at amending existing laws on abortions and draft separate legislations as amendments to the Penal Code and to the Code of Criminal Procedure .
