Former parliamentarian and Opposition Leader of the Central Province Renuka Herath has passed away at the Kandy General Hospital while receiving treatment for an illness, at the age of 72.

She was the Health Minister under president Ranasinghe Premadasa and has borne other various Ministerial positions under UNP governments.

Mrs. Herath is considered a senior member of the United National Party.
