President’s Counsel Nihal Fernando, on behalf of Perpetual Treasuries at the hearing before the Presidential Commission yesterday, alleged that the Attorney General’s Department was not impartial in its conduct.
Counsel Nihal Fernando also complained to the Presidential Commission appointed to inquire into the bond issue at the Central Bank, that his client had been already tried and convicted by the media.
The panel of senior state counsels appointed by the Attorney General told the Presidential Commission that the magnitude of the crime before them warranted the concern of murder trial.
The panel of senior state counsels, represented by Additional Solicitor General Dappula de Livera said therefore the panel’s commitment to the issue at hand will nothing less than the effort put into a murder trial.
The Presidential Commission to inquire into the Central Bank bond issue was appointed by President Sirisena in January this year. Perpetual Treasuries is alleged to have made ‘unprecedented’ gains in during the Central Bank Bond issuance.
Perpetual Treasuries is allegedly owned by Arjun Aloysius – son-in-law of former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, who was at the held when the bond issuance in question took place.
