UPFA Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, who is currently in remand over misuse of state vehicles, celebrated his 47th birthday within the Parliamentary premises today.
He has been permitted by court to attend the Parliamentary sessions and consultative committee meetings.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and a group of MPs from the Joint Opposition attended Weerawansa's birthday 'party' in Parliament. They cut a birthday cake and congratulated the MP on his birthday.
However, Weerawansa's birthday celebration in Parliament has raised a question from a legal standpoint.
"Weerawansa was permitted by court to attend Parliamentary sessions. By holding a birthday party he has apparently misused the permission given by court. This may be the first time a person who has been remanded for a criminal offense celebrated his birthday outside the prison premises. This can be challenged at the next hearing of Weerawansa's case," a senior lawyer told Asian Mirror.
In response, a sources close to Weerawansa said the MP had nothing to do with the birthday celebration and it was organised by his friends.
"They organised the party and arranged the cake. As Parliamentarians they have every right to do that. Weerawansa was not involved in anything. He just cut the cake on their insistence," he added.
