Historical Buddhist Places In Uva Wellassa To Be Conserved

The Buddhist sacred places in Uva Wellassa area will be conserved by the government. Maligawila, Yudaganawa, Buduruwagala, Wellassa and several other areas have been earmarked for the conservation project. The Department of Archeology, Central Cultural Fund, the Department of Buddhist Affairs have carryout the project as a concerted effort. Initial discussion in this regard was held at the Ministry of Public Administration and Management under the patronage of Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara.

The officials of the relevant areas and Maha sangha attended the meeting. The Maha sangha noted that the government should take measures to mark the Wellassa struggle where many heroes in Sri Lankan history sacrificed their lives on behalf of the motherland. 200th anniversary of the Wellassa struggle falls in year 2018. The Minister said that ancient Buddhist temples and irrigation networks in Uva will be renovated. The independence day of next year will be marked based on Uva Wellassa.
