Sri Lanka Navy arrested 24 Indian fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing practices in Sri Lankan waters Saturday(4).
Accordingly, naval personnel onboard 2 SLN Fast Attack Craft apprehended 9 Indian fishermen along with 2 trawlers while poaching in the seas Northeast of Delft Island. Having brought the apprehended fishermen to the Naval Base SLNS Uttara in Kankasanthurai, they were handed over to the Jaffna Fisheries Directorate for onward investigations.
Further, a group of naval personnel onboard 2 FACs attached to the North Central Naval Command arrested 15 more Indian fishermen poaching in the seas North of Mannar. 2 trawlers was also taken into custody during the arrest. The arrested fishermen, fishing gear and other items were produced before the Fisheries Inspector for further leagal action.
Further, Naval personnel onboard a Fast Attack Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command arrested 8 Indian fishermen along with a fishing trawler poaching in the sea area Northeast off Pulmudai Friday (3).
The arrested fishermen and trawler were handed over to the Harbour Police, Trincomalee for onward legal action.
