Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera yesterday met with newly appointed United Nations Secretary General António Guterres in Geneva yesterday.
‘It was a pleasure meeting @UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres today. He said that #SriLanka is a country that is very dear to his heart,’ Foreign Minister Samaraweera tweeted after the event.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres had praised the Sri Lanka government's effort to strengthen democracy and human rights and had said the UN was ready to assist Sri Lanka implement reforms.
Guterres was appointed 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 January 2017, succeeding Ban Ki-Moon who held office from January 2007 to December 2016.
