Priyasad Dep Likely To Be New CJ: CC To Meet At 9 pm To Make Final Decision

February 27, 2017

Supreme Court Justice Priyasad Dep is tipped to be appointed as the new Chief Justice, informed government sources said.

Chief Justice K. Sri Pavan, who became the Chief Justice in January, 2015, is to retire from his position tomorrow.

The Constitutional Council, chaired by Speaker Maru Jayasuriya, will meet in Parliament at 9 pm today, to make a final decision on the matter.

"Depp is the most experienced candidate for the position and he has an unblemished track record. His integrity and conduct has never come under question. He will be the unanimous choice of the Constitutional Council," a senior government spokesman told Asian Mirror, a short while ago.

The Speaker also had a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena, this morning, over the new Chief Justice's appointment.

Dep, a senior Supreme Court judge, has functioned as the Acting Chief Justice several times.
