Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella said the government had received information on five 'torture chambers' run by university students.
The Minister, addressing a meeting in Kandy yesterday, said the torture chambers are located in the Kandy district.
The Police recently raided a 'torture chamber' run by a group of students attached to the Agriculture Faculty of the Peradeniya University. The students who allegedly ran the torture chamber were arrested by the Police.
"Our university system has to be rescued. Sri Lanka is the only country in which university students run torture houses," the Minister said.
He assured that the Police would conduct raids to apprehend the students running the torture chambers.
Kiriella also added that those who are behind the torture chambers are the same elements disrupting the country's day to day activities by conducting street protests.
