The National Freedom Front has sent a letter to the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) seeking to withdraw from the alliance.
A spokesman of the party said the letter was sent to UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera this morning.
NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa said in Parliament this week that the party would function as an independent group in Parliament, distancing itself from the UPFA alliance.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya's decision on Weerawansa's claim is due on March 07.
