A US based Tamil organizations named US Tamil Political Action Council (USTPAC) has strongly condemned the alleged assassination attempt on TNA Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran.
Multiple media reports revealed last week that a group of former LTTE stalwarts living overseas had masterminded an attack on the Parliamentarian, using a Tamil youth in the North.
The government said it had taken necessary steps to ensure the security of the Parliamentarian.
Issuing a statement, the organization urged all those concerned with politics on the island to guard against any act of violence, and ensure a safe environment for all elected representatives, civil society leaders and community activists.
The full statement issued by USTPAC is as follows:
"Tamil Americans are shocked and dismayed by reports of an alleged plot to assassinate Mr. M.A. Sumanthiran MP in Sri Lanka. US Tamil Political Action Council (USTPAC) unreservedly condemns any such attempt. While details related to the alleged plot are not clear and subject to ongoing investigation, USTPAC urges all those concerned with politics on the island to guard against any act of violence, and ensure a safe environment for all elected representatives, civil society leaders and community activists.
Sri Lanka has a history of impunity and impotence of the judiciary where assassinations of numerous Tamil parliamentarians remain unpunished, the guilty are set free and innocents languish in jail for years without charge. We call upon the authorities to investigate this incident thoroughly and ascertain the facts. Violence as a means to achieve political aims is unacceptable."
