The Centre Against Private Medical Colleges (CPMC) has reportedly filed a case at the Human Rights Commission against the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) for accrediting degrees from private universities.
The CPMC is concerned that the rights of patients is being compromised when the Sri Lanka Medical Council recognises degree holders from private medical colleges and accredits them as doctors.
Local university students are agitating against private medical college graduates being allowed to register at the SLMC and say they move undermines free education.
The CPMC had echoed these concerns, saying it was unfair that students who passed their AL’s well were denied an opportunity for further learning while those who failed but had the money to pay for private education were allowed to become doctors.
