Cabinet Minister Mano Ganesan has come out strongly against the ruling coalition's lack of enthusiasm to formate a new constitution.
"Enthusiasm towards a new constitution is diminishing. it's down under in the list of the major parties. oh..Sri Lanka!," the Minister tweeted yesterday.
The introduction of a new constitution was one of the major promises by the ruling alliance at the last Presidential election. The United National Front for Good Governance reiterated it at the Parliamentary election, in August, 2015.
It is now clear that the process of formulating a new constitution has become slow and lethargic.
The SLFP, the party led by the President, has claimed that they would only support a constitutional amendment that does not require a new constitution. The party also supports the Executive Presidency, which President Sirisena promised to abolish within 100 days after coming to power.
The UNP, the party which has the most number of seats in Parliament is yet to voice its official view on the matter.
However, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, speaking to the Foreign Correspondents Association in Sri Lanka said yesterday that a referendum on the proposed new constitution was a risk worth taking.
