Vijitha Rohana Wijemuni, the astrologer arrested for making the ‘prediction’ that Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena would die in January, was released on bail this morning.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe ordered his release on a cash bail of Rs. 10, 000 and two sureties of Rs. 1 million. A travel ban was additionally slapped on the previous convict.
Wijemuni, a formal naval officer, was charged with attempted murder, when he assaulted then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi during his visit to Sri Lanka in 1989.
He was found guilty of attempted culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced to six years in prison but was accorded presidential pardon by President Ranasinghe Premadasa after two and a half years.
Wijemuni was arrested by the CID on Tuesday (31) after he refused to take down a video predicting the President's death in January, saying none of his predictions had been proven untrue thus far.
