Former Navy Intelligence Head To Be Arrested Over Disappearances

The CID today informed Colombo Additional Magistrate J. Trotsky that the former head of the Navy Intelligence, Rear Admiral Ananda Guruge, is to be arrested over the disappearance of two individuals in 2009.

A Lieutenant Commander, Dhammika Anil Mapa, was further remanded till February 9 over the same incident. Another intelligence officer is also to be arrested, the CID said.

They are accused of the abduction and disappearance of two individuals in 2009. The van of one of the disappeared had been found at Welisara army camp after it was cut to 72 pieces, the CID told court.

The defense argued that the van had been taken over during the war as an intelligence report said that it contained bombs concealed. Therefore it was cut to pieces to be searched, the defense added. However, the police rejected this argument, saying that there were bomb disposal units which could do this work.
