The vehicle assembly plant to be established in Kuliyapitiya has created controversy, especially after it was revealed that it was not exactly a Volkswagen plant that was coming up there.

The government had continuously claimed that Volkswagen company will invest in a plant in Kuliyapitiya.

The Prime Minister also claimed on several occasions that a Volkswagen plant will come up in Sri Lanka.
