Parliamentary rules, regulations and standing orders will be subject to change in 2017 according Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya.
Speaking to media, the Speaker said the government is hoping to introduce new methods and subject Parliament to a extensive set of changes.
The government is hoping for a fresh start in 2017 in order to establish democracy in the country and the government has introduced the Right to Information Bill, appointed Independent Commissions and oversight committees in Parliament to strengthen the country’s democratic system he added.
Speaker Jayasuriya also said a Code of Conduct for Parliamentarians has also been introduced adding the appointment of oversight committees has given Opposition members a platform to engage in the decision making process.
He also pointed out that the government has allowed members of the Opposition to chair 50 percent of the oversight committees claiming members can express their views profusely.
