National Sport To Be Replaced Soon

Dayasiri Jayasekera, Minister of Sports has expressed that he intends to change the National Sport of the country soon.

This is yet to be confirmed officially.

There is no legal document within the Sports Ministry or in the Sri Lanka Archives, that assures Volleyball as the National Sport.

Though Volleyball was much popular among Sri Lankans during last couple of decades, many other games risen to popularity gradually.

The then Minister of Sports Nanda Matthew had announced the decision to the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation without any Cabinet approval or Gazette notification.

Volleyball was introduced to Sri Lanka a century ago. However, the origin of this sport is the United State of America.

The game was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1916 by US national Robert Walter Commack. 

Volleyball was made the National Sport in 1992, by a 3-member Committee headed by Prof Vinnie Vitharana, under the guidance of then Sports Minister Nanda Matthew.

There has not been any objections to selecting Volleyball as the National Sport of Sri Lanka at that time.

The first National Volleyball Team was formed in Sri Lanka in 1955. Since then, nationally, 42 Men Teams and 26 Women Teams have been formed up to now. 

Further, 13 Junior Men Teams, 11 Junior Women Teams, 05 Boys Youth Teams and 03 Youth Girls Teams have been formed. 

Since then and up to now, 175 sportsmen and 129 sportswomen have been able to win the Sri Lanka Colours for Volleyball. 

149 junior sportsmen and 132 sportswomen have represented National Junior Teams. 

60 sportsmen and 36 sportswomen have represented National Youth Boys and Girls Teams respectively.

Sri Lanka is the first nation to select Volleyball as its National Sport.
