Left Democratic Front leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara, in a recent newspaper interview, stressed that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should not become executive Prime Minister.
Nanayakkara, who became infamous for using 'unparliamentary words' at the Prime Minister some time back, said that a new constitution should be introduced and the executive presidency should be removed, giving more power to the parliament. However, this government cannot carry out that task, he added.
Nanayakkara said that the removal of this government was more important that the introduction of a new constitution. A constitution can be introduced under another government, he added.
He insisted that for the time being, the President should have the powers he has to limit the power of the Prime Minister.
Nanayakkara also said that the devolution of power should be more meaningful than it is now. The new system should devolve power within a unitary framework, he insisted.
