In a carefully worded statement on Facebook, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's third son Rohitha Rajapaksa, today stated that "it was sad" to see the "Singha le" movement becoming like the BBS and offered some advise for it to move as a "Sri Lankan" movement.

He made these observations in response to the incident where the word "Sinhale" was written on certain Muslim houses in Nugegoda. Rajapaksa's statement fell short of an outright condemnation.

"It was sad to see that the Singha Le movement becoming like BBS. Singha le does not mean they must speak Sinhala or be a Buddhist. It is simply to show that Sri Lankans do not bow down to any one or any county that the blood in our veins are like the lions blood and we do walk with heads held high like brave lions", Rajapaksa said.

Rajapaksa said that it was sad to see this movement being used to attack fellow Sri Lankans who were not Buddhists.

"Just because our country is named as Sri Lanka it does not mean it belongs to only Sinhala people", Rohitha Rajapaksa also said. He urged for the use of "Singha le" movement to unite Sri Lanka.

The 'Sinhale'  campaign was started on social media platforms, such as Facebook, by an extremist group seemingly supportive of the Bodu Bala Sena organization and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. However, neither the Bodu Bala Sena nor the former President has openly associated with the group carrying out the ' Sinhale' campaign.
