India has built 16,000 houses in the civil war-ravaged northeast Sri Lanka for the war displaced people in 2015.

The houses are being built under the Rs. 1,500 crore the Indian Housing Project that has the target to build 50,000 houses in the country.

The project was announced in 2010, and so far 43, 800 houses have been successfully completed and handed over to beneficiaries under the project.

As many as 2,000 more houses in north will be completed in a next few months, while construction work on 4,000 houses for the plantation workers in the central parts of the country will start soon.

According to the Indian High Commission to Colombo, the project is being implemented in close consultation with Sri Lankan Government and other stake-holders.
