JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva today urged the government to hold the Local Government Elections without further delay.
Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Silva said that the government delayed elections for Local Government bodies because of intraparty issues of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the issues between the main two parties of the government.
The President was saying one thing while the Prime Minister is saying another, Silva said, adding that the government does not show a clear policy regarding the matter.
Silva made these observations commenting on President Maithripala Sirisena’s move to extend the tenure of several Local Government (LG) bodies by six months. He demanded the government to hold the LG elections immediately under the existing electoral system.
Silva also added that interparty issues should not affect people’s right to practice democracy or the electoral system of the country.
