President Gives Prank Call To Ardent Rajapaksa Supporter During Wedding Ceremony

December 24, 2015

President Maithripala Sirisena, who attended a wedding ceremony this morning, gave a prank call to singer Janaka Wickremasinghe, an artiste and a vociferous supporter of the political campaign of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Wickremasinghe, a singer hailing from Polonnaruwa, was dumbfounded when he realized that he received a prank call from the President. Sources close to the President said the latter shared a close friendship with the singer when Sirisena was a minister of the Rajapaksa government.

While Sirisena contested the election as the common candidate of the opposition, Wickremasinghe openly supported Rajapaksa's presidential bid.

The incident took place when the President graced the wedding of artiste Kumarasiri Pathirana's son, another singer hailing from the President's electorate, Polonnaruwa.

"The President talked to Wickremasinghe as if he was an old friend of the singer. But, the artiste could not recognize his voice. The President was in a jovial mood and he enjoyed the act thoroughly," a person who sat close to the President during the wedding said.

After Wickremesinghe hung up the call, Pathirana had told his fellow singer that it was President Sirisena who gave him the prank call. After a few minutes, Wickremesinghe had contacted President Sirisena again over the phone and apologized profusely for not recognizing the "prank caller."
