MDMK general secretary Vaiko, who staged a protest here against the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa for Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony, was detained by Delhi Police after MDMK workers broke police barricades.
Vaiko, who held a black-flag demonstration at Jantar Mantar, had opposed the invitation extended to the Sri Lankan President and had asked the Prime Minister-designate as well as BJP President Rajnath Singh to reconsider the decision.
"We have come to Delhi to register our protest to the arrival of the Butcher of Tamils, the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse," Vaiko said.
Vaiko had earlier said at a time when everybody is expecting a dawn for Sri Lankan Tamils under Modi's rule, it is unavoidable to oppose Rajapaksa's entry into India.
Rajapaksa arrived here today with a delegation to attend Modi's swearing-in ceremony.
All arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony of 63-year-old Modi , who led BJP to an astounding victory in the Lok Sabha polls, have been made.
It is expected that nearly 3,000 guests, including seven SAARC Heads of Government, will attend the landmark event.
This is the first time that SAARC Heads of Government have been invited to the swearing-in ceremony of an Indian Prime Minister.
President Pranab Mukherjee will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Modi and his council of Ministers in the presence of a host of leaders. (ANI)
