Lanka Sama Samaja Party General Secretary Prof. Tissa Vitharana said today that a two thirds majority in Parliament and a referendum is needed to convert it to a Constitutional Assembly for the purpose of drafting a new constitution.
Addressing a media briefing this morning, he said that the LSSP was in support of the drafting of a new constitution.
However, the people did not elect a Constitutional Assembly at the recent general election, he argued. Therefore, there is no mandate to turn the Parliament into a Constitutional Assembly without a two thirds majority in Parliament and a referendum, he further said.
The Prime Minister recently said that the Parliament will be turned into a Constitutional Assembly in January, for the purpose of drafting a new constitution.
