Death Toll In Indian Factory Blast Rises To Five: 127 Injured

The death toll in a twin blast inside a chemical factory on Thursday in Indian state of Maharashtra has gone up to five and 127 others have been injured, some of them critically, officials said.

The blasts occurred at Dombivali in Thane district, about 40 north of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra.

Officials said they have completely doused the fire triggered by the blasts.

"The cooling operation is on at the factory and we have completely doused the flames," said an official.

"So far five people including a woman were killed and 127 others injured."

All the injured according to officials were admitted to hospitals.

Officials fear the death toll may increase further as a few more people were feared to be trapped under the debris of the building.

The blasts of a huge boiler inside the factory manufacturing organic chemical products was strong to the extent that it collapsed the building.

Locals said the impact of blasts shattered window panes of many buildings in the vicinity and its impact was felt within a radius of 4 kilometer.

Authorities have rushed fire tenders to the spot to douse the flames and sealed the periphery of the factory as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, local government has ordered a probe into the blasts and warned of strict action against the people responsible for the accident.

"Saddened to know about the unfortunate and tragic incident that took place at Dombivali," Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wrote on twitter.

Fadnavis said they have initiated relief and rescue measures at the site.

Officials said firefighters evacuated people from the nearby area and managed to control fire by removing chemicals from the nearby factories.
