Google has released its annual list of the year’s fastest-rising search requests. Although Google’s list usually comes last each year, its rankings typically provide more telling insights into what people were thinking because the company’s technology processes about two out of every three search requests made on the Internet.

In India, the 2014 general elections topped the list of trending searches in India, followed by FIFA 2014 and the iPhone 6. Surprisingly, iPhone 6 ranks higher than newly-elected Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who stands at the fifth position.

The 2014 general elections saw a high voter turn-out this year, which bought the BJP-led NDA coalition into power. It was also the longest election in the country’s history, running in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May 2014.

The buzz around the 2014 FIFA World Cup was far more than what the country has ever witnessed. According to Maxus Insights’ Social Media Statistics, India alone showed a rise of 4.4% in the game, with over 3.5 million engaged users on the Facebook page.

Similarly the iPhone 6, which was launched during the Diwali festive season, saw a huge interest among the masses. Some reports said that the phones went out of stock within 72 hours of launching in India.

Other top-trending searches include IPL 2014 and the movies Ragini MMS, Kick, Jai Ho and Happy New Year.
