The attention of The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has been drawn to recent media reports pertaining to an opinion sought from the Supreme Court by His Excellency, The President.
The Chamber believes that the progress made by the country since the end of the war in May 2009 and the positive aspirations and stability arising there from needs to be preserved.
In order to do so, decisions at this critical juncture must build confidence and receive wide acceptance across society including the business community. Therefore, it is important that the process followed should be and is seen to be transparent, equitable and fair. Under the circumstances, we appeal that sufficient time and space be provided to facilitate the broad consultative process that is essential prior to a decision being arrived at on this vital subject.
Whilst the legal and constitutional issues involved are beyond the scope and competency of the Ceylon Chamber, we remain confident that the Supreme Court will address such issues in keeping with the spirit and provisions of the constitution.
