Truecaller, world's largest verified mobile phone community announced its foray in Sri Lanka, as a strategic entrance to one of its key emerging markets. Truecaller is a Swedish company that has currently over 75 million users across the world and growing. It is a huge opportunity for Truecaller to further extend this service to millions of users across Sri Lanka.
Truecaller allows mobile environments to become smarter by allowing a user to connect with who they want, when they want. It enables a user to expand their contact list beyond the capacity of their mobile’s phonebook. Resulting in clear identification of who is calling without even having that number saved in their phonebook. Truecaller can be downloaded for free in Sinhala, Tamil, English and many other languages as a smartphone app on iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry (7 & 10), Symbian S60 and Series 40.
The biggest reason for Truecaller’s rapid growth, is that the app solves a major pain point for mobile users in the form of eliminating spam calls and instantly identifying who is calling. Truecaller currently has over 28,000 Sri Lankan spam callers reported within the app, which all users are instantly protected from after downloading. The app blocks and identifies over 5 million spam calls a day, on a global scale. Truecaller can act as Sri Lankan’s personal assistant by telling them who is calling so they can decide whether they want to answer the phone or not.
“We are happy to launch the Truecaller mobile application in Sri Lanka officially," said Kari Krishnamurthy, VP of Growth and Partnerships of Truecaller Asia, Middle East and Africa. “We saw Sri Lanka emerging as a potential growth market, and decided to focus more on the country by offering this latest innovation to all Sri Lankan smartphone users.”
He further added, "Till some time ago, a call - if missed- had to be returned just to find out who the caller was, and in this process users would fall prey to spam callers. But, the launch of Truecaller, world’s largest mobile phone community will now help users across to take the right call. This gives users more power and control over their own mobile phone – be it blocking spammers, or simply identifying numbers from people and businesses that you do want to connect with. The company is aiming to end 2014 with 120 million users around the globe."
The innovativeapp received an investment of $18.8 million from Sequoia Capital earlier this year. Sequoia Capital has been an early investor in companies such as Apple, Cisco, Dropbox, Google, LinkedIn, Oracle, Yahoo, YouTube and Zappos.
