German Ambassador to Sri Lanka Holger Seubert on Thursday expressed hope that Sri Lanka would ease the import restrictions so that the trade between Sri Lanka and Germany would be further strengthened.
He made this remark when he called on Premier Mahinda Rajapaksa in Colombo.
“I expressed my hope that Sri Lanka will be able to ease import restrictions in the near future, thus bringing German-Sri Lankan trade back to normal,” he tweeted.
“Sri Lanka today exports more than double the value of goods to Germany than the other way round, with this gap further widening,” he said.
Accordingly the discussion aimed at a number of specific topics, mainly on the controversial issue of import restrictions and its consequences to German-Sri Lankan trade. The envoy also ensured the Prime Minister that Germany was here as a friend, ready to support whenever required.
"I was happy to hear the Prime Minister lauding Germany’s support to Sri Lanka in numerous fields."
