Johnny Writes from Welikada, Coins Nickname for AKD

Former MP Johnston Fernando, currently in custody over a case involving an illegally assembled BMW vehicle, has released a message addressed to his party members and supporters in Kurunegala from Welikada Prison.

Translation of Fernando’s letter:

"Dear friends,

I know you didn’t expect my address for the 2024 General Election to come from me in these circumstances. Just as in 2015, opportunists are once again trying to eliminate politically powerful figures through slander and state power. They aim to imprison and suppress us to fulfill their own agendas. The only difference now is that a ‘Sooththara Puncha’ (cunning man) is leading the charge from the President’s seat.

For me, these challenges are nothing more than dust on a fingertip. It’s a mistake to think I’ll abandon my beliefs or the people of Kurunegala. Despite everything—even the house I was born in, built by my parents, was burned down—these tactics won’t stop me.

To those who believe they can crush my resolve: my life’s work is rooted in the love and trust of the people of Kurunegala. This bond cannot be extinguished by prison walls. Rathkarawwa, my family home, and the Wilgoda office may have been burned down by a handful of people consumed by hatred, but as long as I have the people’s trust, I will not be defeated.

Now is the time to show that my politics, fueled by the people’s love and strengthened by years of commitment, remains unshakable. My political journey, spanning over 30 years, has always been bolstered by people like you. Your dedication has been my strength, as shown by the high number of votes I receive in every election.

From rural health centers in Kahapathwala to sports fields in Dambadeniya, indoor stadiums, carpeted roads, and highways—these are all fruits of your love. Our connection spans from homes without electricity in places like Nikaweratiya to the jogging paths around Kurunegala Lake and the Badagamuwa and Batalagoda reserves. Your unwavering support means more to me now than ever.

Let our party members know we stand ready to make any sacrifice for the politics of trust. Remind them that our respect and admiration for Mahinda Rajapaksa, who once saved this country, remain unchanged. Despite any challenges, the Namal Rajapaksa-led Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and our members will be safeguarded. My commitment to your trust and faith, which I have always proven, will never waver.

I am still the ‘Johnny’ you know. Stand with me, and let’s continue this journey together.

Let’s win together.

Let’s rise united.

Let’s defeat lies with truth."
