Members of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) party led by their Chief Vaiko staged a protest in India today over a demanding the Indian Government to allow the United Nations (UN) team to probe atrocities on Tamils by the Sri Lanka Government.

MDMK has reportedly demanded that the UN not allow Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse to address the General Assembly later this month.

Earlier this year, Vaiko staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against President Rajapaksa's visit to India to attend Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony as Prime Minister.

The Sri Lankan President is scheduled to address UNGA on September 25.

Vaiko said that Indian Government, in the name of ensuring cordial relations with Colombo, should not 'compromise' on the rights of the ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.

He also urged the Indian Government to allow a UN panel probing the alleged war crimes to hold its probe in India.

Indian media reported that the MDMK chief has also met the Prime Minister and said that the latter has promised to give his attention to the issue of minorities and the killings of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
