Dr. Nimal Gamage, cosmetic surgeon who was arrested in connection with the death of a lady doctor who underwent a cosmetic surgery, had accused "plastic surgeons" in Sri Lanka of tarnishing his image and reputation for what he termed as "petty advantages".
The controversial doctor added that the plastic surgeons of Sri Lanka are having a field day with media campaigns to damage my reputation and making slandering statement as well.
"I am happy to be out on bail. As an honest and respectable member of Sri Lanka Medical Council since 1982 I know that it is against the laws of the Medical Council to make any public statements against another doctor’s skills and reputation. It is considered highly unethical and probably considered professional misconduct as well," Nimal Gamage said in an update on his official Facebook profile.
"Recently another doctor who is also a plastic surgeon died from and antibiotic injection and in my medical opinion due to an anaphylactic shock within 10 minutes of a small dose of about 100mg of Cefuroxime given intravenously. I respected her own personal decision to trust her face with a cosmetic surgeon like me when she could have gone to a plastic surgeon. This medicine is available almost in any pharmacy in Sri Lanka and estimated incidence of serious anaphylactic shock is probably like one in 10 or 20 laks to one." he added.
"A large number of naturopathic doctors are using Glutathione in USA. It is a natural substance which is like a vitamin or a supplement. It is present in all our food. Allopathic medical doctors are generally not aware of it. Many clinics across the USA are using it today for various benefits. Being a natural substance is removes all toxins from your body and provides you a beautiful skin colour," he explained.
Commenting on the lady doctor’s death, Dr. Nimal Gamage said he did his best to recover the patient and unfortunately the event happened too fast.
“She did not undergo any cosmetic surgery with me that day. And the injection was only given to protect from infections on her own request. It is not a beauty treatment. You could get it from any MBBS doctor for sore throat, pneumonia, skin infections, meningitis, and hundreds of other infections. Some doctors are already avoiding antibiotic injections in their clinics after this incidence and hopefully will avoid unnecessary medicines at all times,” Gamage said.
“Today thousands of cosmetic surgeons who are not plastic surgeons are legally practicing in USA, Europe and other advanced countries. I only practice medical treatments as a member of World Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons. I don’t have a beauty parlour. I don’t have a beauty salon. I am also a physician certified in the USA and it would be unfair to lower my professional status to that of a beautician. It is also unfair to attack the skilled beauticians of Sri Lanka without knowing any facts. Most of the leading beauticians are my close friends and they do a great service to their clients,” he added.
